A maker's mark is one of the oldest ideas in craft. The potter's stamp on the base of the bowl. The small signature in the corner of the canvas. It says a person stood behind this and is willing to be known for it. On the web, where most things are anonymous and disposable, a mark is almost a radical act.
What the badge is actually claiming
The badge is a claim, and the claim is a high one: that a site built in minutes can be good enough to sign. That fast and good are not opposites. That you should not be able to tell, from the site alone, whether it took a week or a coffee break. Every time someone leaves the mark on, they are co-signing that claim — and every time someone visits a beautiful site and sees it, the claim gets a little more credible.
