Renew, transfer or remove a domain
How auto-renew works, how to renew by hand, how to transfer a domain in or out of UOVA, and what removing a domain does and does not do.
For the complete documentation index, see llms.txt. This page is also available as Markdown.
#Auto-renew
Auto-renew is on by default for domains bought through UOVA, and it applies only to them: for others UOVA answers "Auto-renew applies to domains registered through UOVA." Switch it on or off with the switch in the Renews column of the Domains page, or with Turn auto-renew off or Turn auto-renew on in the row menu. UOVA charges the renewal price recorded when you bought the domain.
A daily job runs at 09:00 UTC. Charging needs auto-renew on and a card saved at checkout.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 30 to 7 days before expiry | One reminder email. With auto-renew on the subject is "<domain> renews in 30 days". With it off the subject names the expiry date and says auto-renew is off. |
| Within 7 days, auto-renew on and a saved card | UOVA charges the card off-session, at most once a day, up to 3 attempts. Each failed charge sends "Action needed: renewal payment for <domain> failed". |
| After 3 failed attempts | Auto-renew is turned off and a final warning email is sent. |
| Card charged but the registrar refuses | The charge is refunded, the domain is not renewed, and the attempt counts toward the three. |
| Renewal succeeds | The expiry moves a year on and you get "<domain> renewed for another year". |
| Within 7 days, auto-renew off | One warning email. |
| After expiry | UOVA sends "Final notice: <domain> expires <date>" and marks the domain abandoned. Its emails say your site stops resolving at the domain and that, after the registry's grace period, anyone can take the name. |
#Renew by hand
Step 1: Open Domains
Find the domain and choose Renew… in the row menu or in the Details drawer. It is offered for domains UOVA registered that have an expiry date.
Step 2: Confirm the price
The dialog "Renew <domain>?" says it adds one year, shows the date the registration now runs to and the renewal price, and says nothing is charged until you pay on the next page.
Step 3: Pay
Press Continue to payment and complete the Stripe checkout.
You can renew up to 30 days after expiry. Later than that UOVA answers that the domain "expired more than 30 days ago and has left the renewal window", that it may still be restorable through the registry's redemption process, and to contact support. A domain registered elsewhere is refused with "Only domains registered through UOVA can be renewed here. Domains you connected from another registrar renew at that registrar." A domain already close to the 10-year maximum cannot be extended further. Multi-year renewal is listed as coming soon on the domains pages.
#Transfer a domain in
In the dashboard choose Domains then Transfer in. The dialog "Transfer a domain to UOVA" asks for the Domain, the Authorization code and the Site it opens, then shows the price and a Continue to payment button.
- A paid plan, and a published site to attach it to.
- The domain's EPP (authorisation) code, 6 to 64 characters, from your current registrar. Otherwise UOVA says "That doesn't look like a valid transfer code (EPP/auth codes are 6-64 characters). Get it from your current registrar."
- An ending in the price table. Otherwise: "We don't support <ending> transfers yet."
- The price equals the ending's renewal price, and the transfer adds a year.
- A domain that is transfer-locked is refused, and so is one inside ICANN's 60 days after registration ("This domain can transfer in ~<n> days"). Unlock it at your current registrar first.
While it runs the row shows Transfer pending. A daily job completes the transfer or refunds it if it cannot finish. The dialog says a transfer takes up to 5 days, and UOVA's domains page says typically 5 to 7 days. Your site keeps working on its current address meanwhile. When it completes you get "<domain> has arrived". If it fails you get an email whose subject begins "Transfer of <domain> didn't go through" and says you have been refunded.
#Transfer a domain out
For a domain registered through UOVA, choose Transfer out… in its row menu. The dialog "Transfer <domain> out?" says it unlocks the domain at the registrar and shows its transfer code, and that your new registrar charges for the transfer and UOVA does not. Press Unlock and get code, give the code to the new registrar, and press Done. The ICANN 60-day rule applies after a registration or a recent transfer. Domains registered elsewhere are not handled here: they "are already under your control there".
The domain manager at uova.com/domains also lets you lock a domain again.
#Remove a domain
Remove in the row menu opens "Remove <domain>?". For a domain UOVA registered it says the domain "stops opening your site at once. You still own the name until it expires; turn auto-renew off separately if you won't keep it." For another domain it says the name stays yours at your registrar. Confirming deletes the domain's entry, detaches it from UOVA hosting and shows "<domain> removed". The <slug>.uova.io address cannot be removed.
#Limits
- Auto-renew charges use your saved card, off-session.
- Manual renewal: up to 30 days after expiry only, one year at a time from the dashboard.
- A failed registration, renewal or transfer is refunded in full automatically (see Refunds, taxes and invoices).
Only the ones you bought through UOVA. Domains you connected stay with your registrar.
After the retries UOVA turns auto-renew off and warns you. Renew by hand from the Domains page, within 30 days after expiry.
There is no action for it. A domain you connected can be removed and connected again to another site. For a domain you bought, see the warning above before you remove it.
