Pages and navigation
Add, rename, reorder, duplicate and delete pages in the Pages panel, and learn how a new page gets its address and reaches your site menu.
For the complete documentation index, see llms.txt. This page is also available as Markdown.
Every page of your site is listed in the Pages panel of the editor. Open a page to edit it, and use the panel to add, rename, reorder, duplicate or delete pages. Page changes reach your live site only after you press Update (see Versions and republishing).
#Before you start
- Open your site in the editor and choose Pages in the icon rail. The rail is hidden at 860 px wide and narrower.
- A site made from a template starts with that template's pages. A generated site starts with the pages the generator made.
#Add a page
Step 1: Open the Pages panel
The top of the panel has a search box (Search pages...) and a + button.
Step 2: Select +
The Add a page dialog opens.
Step 3: Name the page
Type a name under Create a new page, up to 80 characters, then press Create page. The button stays off until you type a name. The new page opens with one section, Page introduction, holding a heading with the page name.
Step 4: Or start from something that exists
The same dialog can show three more lists, each only when it has something to offer. Pages you can restore lists original template pages missing from your site. More of an existing type lists extra pages your design supports. Start from a page in this site copies a page you already have; type in Find a page to copy to filter the list.
#Work with the page list
Pages are split into Main Pages (the pages whose addresses are /, /about, /contact and /home) and Other Pages. Click a row to open that page.
| Action | How | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Rename | Double-click the row, or the three-dot button (More) then Rename | Type the new name and press Enter to save or Esc to cancel. Leaving the field also saves it. The address changes only in the cases listed under Page addresses. |
| Move up or down | The Move up and Move down arrows on the row | Swaps the page with its neighbour in the same group. It changes list order only, never the address. The arrows are hidden while you search and when a group has one page. |
| Duplicate | More then Duplicate | Creates a page named after the original with Copy added, such as Pricing Copy. Its address is the original address plus -copy- and a number. The copy opens straight away. |
| Delete | More then Delete | Removes the page at once, with no confirmation. The first page in the list becomes the open page. The item is hidden when only one page is left. |
#Page addresses
The address of a new page is a slash followed by its name in lowercase. Letters and digits are kept, accents are removed and everything else becomes a hyphen, so About Us becomes /about-us. A name with no usable characters becomes /page. If the address is taken, UOVA adds -2, -3 and so on.
If you rename a page you made yourself, its address follows the new name only while it still matches what the old name produced. A template page keeps the address its template designed, because the template's menus and links point there.
#Navigation
When you add a page with Create page, UOVA also adds a link to it in your header menu, as a copy of the menu's last visible link. It does this only when the menu already has at least two named links. It skips a menu that already links to the page or already has a link with the same name. Footer link lists are left alone because UOVA treats them as yours to curate. A duplicated page does not get a menu link.
Deleting a page does not remove its links from menus. After a delete, open each menu and remove any link that still points at the page. Menu and link editing is covered in Buttons and links.
#Your homepage
There is no Set as Homepage action. The live home view is the page whose address is /. If no page has that address, the server-rendered home falls back to the first page in the list. UOVA does not block you from moving or deleting the page at /, so keep a page there unless you mean to remove it.
The homepage's search title, description, share image, canonical address and search-hiding switch are read from the page that is first in your site's page order, which is normally the home page. The move arrows change that order.
#Per-page title and description
Below the page list, SEO Settings for the open page offers Meta Title (it shows the page name as a placeholder) and Meta Description. Edits made here are not recorded as undo steps. The Inspector SEO tab holds the same two values plus the share image, canonical address and search-hiding switch, and is explained in SEO settings.
#Limits
- Page names: 80 characters.
- Delete is not offered for the last remaining page.
- A brand-new page can take up to about a minute to appear on the live site, because UOVA caches a missing-page answer for 60 seconds.
- There is no page-level password. Password protection covers the whole site (see Publishing).
There is no action for it. The live home view is the page at the address /.
No. A template page keeps its designed address, and an owner-made page keeps its address once it no longer matches the old name.
Press CmdZ first. If the page came from your template, it also appears under Pages you can restore in the Add a page dialog. Otherwise restore a saved version from Version history, which replaces your current draft.
