Layers, move, hide, duplicate, delete
Use the Layers panel and the inspector's quick-action row to select, rename, reorder, hide, duplicate or delete elements, and see why some are locked.
For the complete documentation index, see llms.txt. This page is also available as Markdown.
#The quick-action row
Select an element. At the top of the inspector, under its name, a row of five icon buttons gives you:
| Action (tooltip) | What it does |
|---|---|
| Move up, Move down | Moves the element one place within its parent, and saves an undo step |
| Duplicate | Adds a copy named "<name> Copy" at the end of the same parent and selects it |
| Hide element, Show element | Hides the element on the live site, or shows it again |
| Delete | Asks "Delete \"<name>\"?" and removes the element, or hides it on a template page |
A button that cannot be used is shown dimmed, and its tooltip gives the reason, for example "Can't move up: the site's navigation". After a Delete the selection clears.
#The Layers panel
Open Layers in the icon rail to see the element tree. Click a row to select the element and scroll the canvas to it. A chevron collapses a row's children, and the number beside it counts them. A crossed-eye badge marks a hidden element, and a padlock marks a locked one. Right-click a row for the context menu:
| Menu item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Select | Selects the element |
| Rename | Edits the element's name in the row |
| Duplicate | The same as the quick-action Duplicate |
| Add block inside | Selects the element and opens Add Elements with it as the target |
| Hide section, Show section | Hides or shows the element, and saves an undo step |
| Move Up, Move Down | Moves the element, unless the reason in its tooltip applies |
| Delete | Deletes the element, or hides it on a template page. It does not ask first |
In Rename, press Enter to keep the new name and Esc to cancel. Leaving the box also keeps it. An empty name is ignored. You can also set Name in the Content tab. Layer rows cannot be dragged to reorder. Use Move up and Move down.
#Delete versus hide on template pages
On a template page, Delete hides a template section instead of removing it. The section keeps its place, you can show it again, and the change can be undone. Generated sites are built on a template, so this applies to them too. For anything you added yourself, Delete removes the element for real.
An owner hide is honoured on the live site, so a hidden section stays hidden after you publish until you show it again.
#Why a move or delete is refused
| Tooltip reason | Meaning |
|---|---|
| the site's navigation | The navigation and its drawer or menu are pinned, and nothing moves above them |
| the footer | The footer is pinned, and nothing moves below it |
| the footer's legal line | The "©" line and the element that holds it |
| the page itself | The root of a template page |
| the section's design sets its place | Inside a section, the template paints its own order, so a swap would change nothing visitors see |
| the top of the page, the end of the page | A section is already first or last among the template's sections |
| the start of the list, the end of the list | An element is already first or last in its list |
| the section it sits inside, the template's layout | The template paints this section inside another one |
| it isn't shown on this page | The page does not paint that row. The Layers panel does not list it |
#Repeating cards
On templates with repeating lists, such as product cards, each card shows its own Duplicate, Move up, Move down and Delete controls on the canvas, and a + Add button sits at the end of the list. Cards can also be dragged to reorder. With a card selected, CmdD adds a copy and Delete removes it, and CmdUp and CmdDown reorder it.
#Shortcuts
CmdD duplicates, and Delete or Backspace deletes (hides on a template page) without asking. See Keyboard shortcuts.
#Common questions

No. Pages are managed in the Pages panel. See Pages and navigation.
Yes, with CmdZ or the Undo button, while the step is still in the history. See Undo, autosave and version history.
